Ian has worked in the radio and television broadcasting industry, production industry and related RF transmission and digital fields for over 40 years.

His duties have included the assessment of the performance of technology in broadcasting on-air and studio facilities, programme delivery systems and the efficient and effective design and operation of radio and television stations of sizes varying from small transmission playout centres to capital city commercial stations.

He has extensive experience in RF related systems including microwave terrestrial, VHF, UHF and satellite systems.

In these positions Ian has designed many production, outside broadcasting and broadcasting station facilities both in Australia and overseas.

  • Channel 9 commercial television station "Funcinpec TV" in Phnom Penh Cambodia, Several television stations and a satellite distribution network in Myanmar,
  • Designed and commissioned control systems for a satellite distribution network in Indonesia, and several small production facilities in Australia.
  • Designed and commissioned NBC TV satellite facilities for uplinking the NBC 2000 Sydney Olympics programmes from the Sydney Olympic site to the USA,
  • Designed and commissioned compression systems and supervised fibre transmission in Athens for the Seven Network for Athens Olympic Games.
  • Designed and commissioned satellite systems in Solomons and East Timor for Australian Department of Defence.
  • Surveyed and designed a wireless internet system in Suva Fiji and implemented many computer related projects in schools and broadcast applications.

Extensive experience in digital compression and MPEG digital television systems including encoding, transport stream processing, recording and transmission.

Was intimately involved with the testing of competing systems for the Australian Digital Television Service in conjunction with the Government Communications Laboratory and operated the transmitter for the first digital trial transmissions in Australia prior to the announcement of the chosen system.

Designed and supervised construction and commissioning of the Digital Video on IP system Australian Defence Department

For a number of years provided engineering consultancy services to Comsyst Pty Ltd, a large systems integration company based in Sydney, including design and commissioning and training of local staff for communications and re-broadcasting facilities in the Hong Kong Lantau Airport road infrastructures in Hong Kong, Designed and commissioned many different radio and television related projects for broadcast and television stations in Australia including 2MMM, 2DAY, 2SM, River 949 Ipswich, 4CA Cairns, the Department of School Education broadcast network to schools, OTEN, and commissioning of the anchor stations for the new Australian Defence Force Satellite Communications System Anchor station at Harman in Canberra.

Has recently been responsible for major parts of the design and the commissioning and training of staff in a major upgrade of the ABC satellite interchange system.

Provides engineering consultancy services to United group Limited (Infrastructure), Sydney Teleport, Vision Uplink Australia Pty Ltd, INTELSAT and Measat

Has provided expert evidence in regard to Video Piracy and television matters for the Australian Film and Video Security Office.
